Discovering Irish Flare in the Heart of Huntsville!

If you’ve been craving some traditional Irish classics such as Bangers and Mash or Shepherd’s Pie, you have to make your way over to Keegan’s Public House in downtown Huntsville! Situated in the perfect location overlooking Big Spring Park, Keegan’s offers authentic Irish flare and outstanding drinks in a lively, Old World atmosphere.

Maybe you’re like me and you’ve passed by Keegan’s many times while exploring the downtown area but haven’t had a chance to stop in yet. If that’s the case, you’re in luck! This month, Keegan’s is participating in Huntsville Restaurant Week, a 10-day celebration of the unique local cuisine throughout the city. Huntsville Restaurant Week is taking place August 10th through the 19th with the intention of attracting both locals and visitors to immerse themselves in the culinary talent of the Rocket City.

Each of the participating restaurants will offer different specials during this time, including some amazing specials for both lunch and dinner at Keegan’s. At lunch time, guests can indulge in Shepherd’s pie and an incredible house salad (pictured below) for just $15! My favorite part of this meal was the lemon basil vinigerette on the salad, which is made from scratch like everything else on the menu.

If you’d rather head to Keegan’s for a hearty meal at dinner time, you can enjoy a small order of Keegan’s Potato Chips (covered in both melted bleu cheese and bleu cheese crumbles), an entree of Bangers and Mash, and a house salad for $20. The chips were crunchy and covered in delicious seasoning, and the bleu cheese on top just melts in your mouth!

This was the perfect appetizer because it was just filling enough to hold me over until the salad and the entree. The mix of melted bleu cheese with bleu cheese crumbles gave it a fun texture, and by the time I finished snacking on these chips, I could not wait to taste the next dish: bangers and mash! I love the photo below because not only does it highlight the delicious entree, but you can also get a glimpse of the beautiful floor-to-ceiling windows in the restaurant that overlook the park.

My visit to Keegan’s was the first time I had ever tried bangers and mash, and while I knew a little about the dish, I wasn’t really sure what to expect. Traditional Irish sausages and a bed of fluffy mashed potatoes were clearly the star of the show, but the dish was made even better with grilled onions, mushrooms, and brown gravy. The sausage was cooked perfectly, and the mix of gravy and mashed potatoes was like a flavor explosion in my mouth. The serving of sausage was so big, I couldn’t finish it, but this meal would be great for leftovers!

Although you’ll receive a ton of amazing food for a great price, you have to leave room for dessert! Seriously, you have to. Pictured here is their out-of-this-world Krispy Kreme Bread Pudding. Yes, you read that correctly. Bread pudding made with Krispy Kreme donuts. Do I even need to say anything else?! This heavenly dessert is topped with whipped cream, peaches, and a scoop of vanilla bean ice cream. The hot bread pudding combined with the cold, creamy ice cream was indescribable, and I could not put my spoon down! Let’s just say I’m very thankful that Keegan’s doesn’t list calories on their menu. 😉

My entire experience at Keegan’s was incredible from start to finish, from the food to the service, and I’m SO excited to go back with my husband during Restaurant Week! If you’re wanting to try something new or just experience some traditional Irish food in Huntsville, make Keegan’s your next stop for a date night, lunch with coworkers, or drinks with your friends!

It’s Wedding Season in the Rocket City!

My best friend from high school and I just got married a little over a month ago on June 9th, and those of you who know us know we’re still talking about the wedding. More specifically, we can’t stop bragging about all of the wonderful vendors who helped make our dream wedding a reality. While I could spend all day talking about our photographers, videographer, caterer, and more, this post will focus just on our wedding desserts.

One of the most traditional parts of any wedding is the wedding cake, but Chris and I have never been very traditional people. 🙂 Instead of a typical wedding cake, we decided to go a different route: one big tower of cupcakes from Gigi’s Cupcakes surrounded by three small towers of french macarons from La Rue French Macarons.

It was a great idea in theory if I do say so myself, but the reality was even better than I could have imagined. Our guests raved about the variety of flavors, the uniqueness of the macarons (I can’t count how many times I heard, “I’ve never had one of these before!”), and the beautiful display that truly captured our personalities.

Gigi’s Cupcakes

While Gigi’s isn’t specific to Huntsville, their cupcakes can help bring any Rocket City wedding to life. The managers at the Huntsville store were so easy to work with, and honestly, the desserts were probably the least stressful part of my wedding. The process started with a cupcake tasting the summer before the wedding where we ultimately decided on three flavors: Strawberry Shortcake, Midnight Magic Chocolate Chip, and of course, Wedding Cake. We were also able to add a small cake to the top of the tower so we could still do a cake cutting at the reception.

I only met with the managers at Gigi’s twice before the wedding, but by the end of our second meeting where we finalized all the details, I was 100% confident that this cupcake tower was going to be perfect. All I had to do the day before the wedding was mark which table the desserts would go on, and Gigi’s handled all of the delivery and set up.

In the picture above, you can see we did a mix of big cupcakes and mini cupcakes, and our guests loved getting to try all three flavors with the mini cupcakes. However, you could always opt for all of one size, a different number of flavors, different color frosting, and more. Gigi’s offers a ton of other flavors and options to make your wedding “cake” exactly what you what, and the store provides gluten free options as well!

Overall, I would recommend Gigi’s Cupcakes to anyone who wants to add a little nontraditional spin on the traditional wedding cake. The price is reasonable for the quality of cupcakes and customer service you receive, the workers are exceptional, and your guests absolutely won’t be disappointed.

La Rue French Macarons

After deciding on our cupcake tower from Gigi’s, Chris and I knew we wanted to add in one more option to our dessert table. I stumbled upon La Rue French Macarons by accident one day on Instagram, and I was instantly blown away by the beautiful pictures, bright colors, and the overall elegance of authentic French macarons right here in Huntsville, Alabama.

This small local business is run by Katie Parkes, a labor and delivery nurse who just happens to also make the best macarons in her free time (so she’s kind of a superwoman!). I contacted her the summer before our wedding, and she quickly sent me a menu of flavors I could choose from and a breakdown of pricing. Chris and I were invited to do a tasting with her, and after one bite, I knew we had to have these unique desserts at our reception.

After the tasting, we decided on three flavors: Pink Champagne, Sea Salt Caramel, and Pistachio, all of which went over so well with our guests. Katie offers a few different options for how to display the macarons, but since we were doing three flavors that matched our wedding colors perfectly, we decided to do three small towers surrounding our cupcake tower. She decorated the bottom of the towers with greenery (a prominent theme in our wedding), and the display was just beautiful.

Throughout the entire wedding planning process, Katie was so quick to get back to me whenever I had questions, and she made sure everything was exactly how I wanted it for the reception. Not only is she efficient and professional, but she’s one of the sweetest people I’ve ever met, and working with her was an absolute dream!

My wedding day was the best day of my life, but I could not have pulled it all together without the help of so many amazing people. Desserts are of course just one part of the wedding (although one of the tastiest parts for sure), but as you can see, you don’t have to go far to find amazing wedding talent in the Rocket City!

Let’s Do This Thing!

Welcome to my new adventure!

Hello everyone! My name is Ally, and I’m a 22 year old college student with a love for food and adventure. I started my first food account on Instagram by the same name (@hsvfoodlife) in the spring of 2017, and since then, my love for food blogging has grown so much! As a result, I’ve decided to start a food blog where I can do more than just post pictures! On this blog, you’ll get to read about why I love Huntsville so much, get some recommendations on where to eat and hang out, and discover some hidden gems tucked away in a city known for space and technology.

My first big adventure as a new food blogger will be participating in the promotion of Huntsville Restaurant Week by eating at some awesome restaurants and then sharing my experience with all of you! I couldn’t be more excited for this opportunity because not only do I get to try some new restaurants, but I also get to meet a ton of people who also love sharing what makes Huntsville so unique! Stay tuned for that adventure in August. 🙂

Just to share a little about me…

When I’m not taking pictures of food, I love traveling, watching Netflix, and exploring new places around Huntsville with my husband Chris. I’m an extremely extroverted introvert – I’m a people person who thrives on periodic alone time. 🙂 I also love reading memoirs and poetry, hanging out with friends every chance I get, and working with prospective students as an Admissions Ambassador at the University of Alabama in Huntsville.

That’s enough about me! I can’t wait to share my favorite restaurants, breweries, coffee shops, unique hang out spots, and more with all of you. If you have any suggestions of things you’d like to read about, please don’t hesitate to contact me or comment below!
